The benefits of indoor cycling are many. You do not have to worry about car drivers. You do not have to worry about crashing on your bicycle. There are no flat tires or mechanical issues that leave you stranded on a long ride. Indoor cycling can reduce sun exposure for those concerned about skin cancer. If it is extremely cold or snowing you can still ride indoors. If you are injured, revovering from illness, you can still ride indoors. |
For competitive bike racers indoor cycling can improve your performance by helping you perfect cycling techniques. You can work on aero positions and cycling leg-stroke efficiency. Racers can find competitive events that fit your schedule. You can race against people at all levels from beginner to elite on various terrain. |
While indoor cycling may not help your ability to navigate a technical single-track mountain bike trail it can help you do it faster. It may not help your ability to corner in criterium races but it will help you get faster at criterium racing. Indoor cycling is a benefical option, it is something different and it definately helps your cycling fitness. |
Focusing on E-Sport Cycling and Virtual Racing, there are several software platforms to choose from. Zwift is the most popular with large numbers of users. Rouvy and Wahoo-X offer very realistic scenary and cycling physics. MyWhoosh requires racer equipment and performance verification along with very real physics. Each platform has it's own idea and presentation. All seem to be growing in users numbers so try them all! |
The world of smart-trainers and smart-bikes is also exploding with a vast range of manufacturers and models. You should certainly do research and plan your purchase. There are smart-bikes (e.g. a complete bike with full technological integration) and smart-trainers that mount to a bike frame directly or mounted to the rear wheel. Again do research because if you plan to race competitively in E-Sport Cycling, there is growing list of minimum criteria that must be met by the equipment.
